Surya Brasil Colour Fixation Range

I had a section of my hair coloured in December 2013 and it has grown out a bit since then, now the colour is on the tips but I like it a lot. I have never used special products for colour treated hair so last weekend was a first for me.

I decided to try out Surya Brasil’s Colour Fixation Range which is ideal for use after Henna or chemically treated hair. So if you have either of those read on.

Surya Brasil is a vegan natural product company that uses sustainable Amazonian plants in their products.  The Colour Fixation range contains plant based proteins which replenish the hairs natural shine and radiance. The range also contains exotic nut butters and plant oils which provide natural antioxidant and UV protection from the damaging effects of the sun. It contains no SLS’s artificial colouring, fragrance, parabens or mineral oils/GMO’s. The range is available in a shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner, hair mask and single treatment mask.

To be honest I was tempted to use Surya Brasil’s Henna Cream. It is a pre mixed hair dye (I had black but it comes in lots of colours) that is safe to use on top my colour but I like my hair colour and they say it covers grey upon first application so I decided against it for now.

Colour on the tips

Colour on the tips – Before the wash.

I went straight to the Restorative Shampoo and in short this stuff was good for my hair. It had no lather and no smell to me so I wasn’t sure about it, but when I rinsed my hair, I knew it had cleaned it and my hair felt soft and not stripped.

I couldn’t believe it when I was done, look how it came out just after the shampoo, my curls looked so curly I could have actually (yes me, 4B/C hair) left the house with a wash and go, my hair looked like a twist out.  I also liked the cap on the bottle and found the product easy to dispense.

Next I decided to do the Restorative Hair mask, and as the directions said I put it all over my damp shampooed hair for 20 mins.

£9.99 (for more information and full ingredients list, click the image)

No plastic caps fit on my head, so when I do deep conditioning now I just use cling film. I buy the value range from any supermarket and wrap my head in that and then either go under the steamer, or on this occasion just wrap my head with the towel.

Me and my cling film hahahaha

The curls stayed in after the deep condition but I have a hair mask that I already love so I wouldn’t say it was better or worse than that one. It was good though and I am confident to give it a small thumbs up.

Finally I applied the leave in conditioner, I think I really like products that make my hair smell fresh and nice, but this didn’t have a scent. I was tempted to leave it at that, the curls were lovely but I didn’t trust just letting it dry and living my life so I two strand twisted it with the leave in and then wore the twist out all week.

£9.99 (for more information and full ingredients list, click the image)

I really think the leave in gave it a really nice shine and I couldn’t stop touching my hair as it felt moisturised. It’s been so cold here and my hair has spent a lot of time under my scarf and woolly hat, yet everyone said my hair looked lovely, even people that don’t usually comment on my hair, so I think I will be adding these products to my favourites list.

The shine and the colour after the leave in was lovely!!! This was when I had undone the twists.

I also liked the definition when I did the twist out.

Curly By Nature – Product Review

Happy New Year everyone, I hope you had an amazing festive season. My first 2015 product review is going to be on the UK based Curly by Nature range.  Read on to find out what happened when I tried them to rescue my dry hair!

Klerissa McDonald, MD Curly by Nature

London based Klerissa McDonald launched the range in Autumn 2013 and I asked her….

Why did you decide to launch a natural hair brand?
“From the tender age of 8, I developed my passion and skills of caring for and styling hair. I have always loved to be adventurous with hair, finding fun in creating beautiful protective styles on my own hair as well as family, friends and regular clients. After experiencing work life in several London salons I saw that there was something missing. It may sound cliche but I am really driven to serve people with quality natural hair care solutions that revive the beauty, wonder and versatility of genetically hair- Curly By Nature gives me this opportunity.

I use my experience as a natural hair care specialist and certified natural product developer to promote healthy hair care practices using effective high quality natural ingredients and simple methods. Each product we’ve developed contains many active ingredients some of which feature plant based proteins, vitamins, antioxidants and effective essential oils. Every ingredient has a direct benefit to the hair or scalp and is uniquely blended to nourish, restore, strengthen and intensely moisturise the the hair and scalp to enhance and maintain the health or your hair- naturally.”

This reply made me decide that I should try a few products but I wanted to know, for those of you who are thinking of starting your own hair product brand, what Klerissa found the hard parts and what she found easy, she said
“The easy bit by far is receiving the positive feedback from expert stylists, professional salons and individual customers. For me, this is the reason Curly By Nature exists- to serve people with rich, effective & quality products that truly make a difference. Our product portfolio maybe quite small at the moment but each individual product contains a high number of active ingredients and undergone rigorous testing that it has proved its versatility.

The hard bit is definitely the non-creative side of the business such as the high level of bureaucracy, financial management etc…. There is a high level of paperwork that is involved in setting up and running a beauty brand and really applies to most if not every business. These things are not particularly fun but it is essential to keep on top it”.

Its been so cold lately I asked her if she had any products that could save our hair from the cold, she said
“I can honestly recommend the whole range at the moment *big smile*. Our blog post “5 weapons to protect against winter-trodden curls” ( points out 5 simple ingredients that you could incorporate into your current regime that will help keep your curls healthy during the winter months. All of these ingredients are featured in our products- particularly the Hair Repair Oil ( This is definitely a winner & best-seller amongst recognised beauty enthusiasts and our customers!”

So, it was time for me to try it.
My hair was so dry dry it looked like this! I had just been wearing it in buns. (Why is it so short? I hear you ask in 2014 my stylist was too scissor happy, no more trims/cuts at the salon for me!)

Anyway with my hair like this, It was time for me to perform a hair rescue using the Curly by Nature Products and some of my own.

First things First – Pre Poo
I first put coconut oil all over my hair the night before, and when I woke up in the morning I sprayed by scalp and hair with a mix of warm water and apple cider vinegar. I then massaged this into the scalp.

Next Step Shampoo
I used the Moisture Shampoo, because I always shampoo when I wash.  Honestly, I wasn’t that keen on it, it gave my hair a slightly stripped feeling but it was cleaned properly and lathered excellently. A little sure went a long way. It retails for £18.99 a bottle and contains Sugar, Coconut, Honey Extract, D-Panthenol , A Blend of Protein , Fruit Extract, Ylang Ylang essential oil.

I had a sample size

Then I conditioned
I put the Intensive Conditioning Mask on for 30 minutes, I used my home steamer for a bit of extra heat, but if you don’t have that, don’t worry, a warm towel works just as well. I liked the conditioner, it was an unusual smell but my hair felt so soft afterwards. This retails for £22.99 per bottle and contains Avocado Oil , Grapeseed Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Phytokeratin , Provitamin B5

When I had finished rinsing the conditioner I two strand twisted for a twist out on damp hair with nothing but my usual leave in on and this Nourishing Gloss Balm, (which launches this march).

The Results…
My hair was definitely rescued, it has not been dry since.  Please don’t laugh at me readers when I say that I loved the twist out SO much that I was so busy rocking it I didn’t take photos :/ In fact I suddenly remembered in the car 5 days later! and this is what I have.

The twistout lasted so long and I did not retwist at night. Check out my hair in those photos, look how shiny and nourished it is. I used a small bit of the nourishing balm on my hair every day and my hair is loving it.  This is a close contender to my usual moisturiser I will let you know when it launches and for how much it is.

Old Wives Tail – Almond and Cinnamon Organic Hair Mask – Product Review

This weekend I needed to give my hair some TLC.  So I decided to try out The Almond and Cinnamon Organic Hair Mask. It is made by a Company called Old Wives Tale.

Old Wives Tail is a small UK hair care company selling handmade organic hair care products, their products are sulphate and paraben free.

Look how it came – pretty packaging

When describing their hair mask they say;

“This protein enriched mask is perfect for dry, broken and brittle hair. Bursting with vitamins and nutrients this almond oil and shea butter based mask will smooth and nourish your hair’s cuticles leaving you with soft, glowing and manageable locks”

This sounded like just what my hair needed. I first shampooed my hair then I slathered this product all over. It was rich and creamy like a body cream and it smelled so warm and yummy. I like the smell of cinnamon it reminds me of the holiday season. Hubby said I smelled like ‘food’ I will have to check with him if that was a compliment or not lol. I then went under my steamer for 15 mins, I wanted to be under longer but I had a visitor so I had to sit and chit chat for at least an hour before I washed it off my hair.

Inside was rich and creamy

In this time I realised I had totally messed up! I should have read the instructions first!  With this hair mask, unlike any others I have used, you are supposed to just put it on your hair, leave it for one hour under a warm towel then shampoo out.

Always read the instructions!

Always read the instructions!

This really confused me as when I looked at the ingredients which are:
Prunus Dulcis (Almond) Oil, Karite Butter Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, Cinnamomum Zeylanicum (Cinnamon) Leaf Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil.

I thought to myself, why would I want to shampoo them out?

Almond Oil
Almond oil has polyunsaturated and mono fatty acids as well as vitamins E, D, B1, B2, B6 and A. These are all helpful nutrients that allow you to grow strong, healthy hair strands. Vitamin E is high in this product which helps you condition your hair

Shea Butter
Shea butter is a rich source of moisture, vitamins and fat for your skin it also has a natural factor 5 sunscreen

Cinnamon Leaf Oil
Cinnamon leaf oil helps stimulates your scalp and encourage healthy hair growth, it is known to help the thinning of hair.

Olive Oil
Olive Oil is known the make your hair thicker, fuller and more lustrous

These are the types of things that my hair likes to keep in!

Anyway I followed what it said and shampooed out – luckily I use a gentle shampoo. Unfortunately I did not like the feel of my hair after the second shampooing so I had to put another conditioner on just for 5 mins before I rinsed out.

My hair after an hour with it on

My hair after an hour with it on – not sure I was feeling it. It did suck up all the moisture though.

I couldn’t say I was a fan of the results, I am used to instant softness after a hair mask and my hair, whilst it didnt feel stripped it just did not feel right to me. I put my hair into two strands and left it to dry.

The next day when I undid my hair and erm….wow I need not have worried, it actually did what it said on the tin. What did they say? Soft, Glowing? Yes my hair was that, it was also shiny and it felt really nice. I would definitely use this again. I did not use flash in the photos below.

IMG_20140922_182405 IMG_20140922_182442 IMG_20140922_182748

Next time – I won’t be doing all that shampooing, I will still use it with the steamer as I really don’t have an hour to spare sitting with it on. Yes there will be a next time.

Moral of the story – read the instructions.
