Natural Inspiration – Bella Joya.

What’s your name and where do you live?
My name is Adejoke but most people call me Joke, and my social media handle is Bella Joya. I live in Houston

When did you go natural and why?
I did my big chop on April 17, 2010. I decided to go natural because I wanted to experience my natural hair texture. I grew up in Nigeria and my hair was natural while I was in elementary school, my mum refused to put a relaxer in my hair. Throughout high school I wore my hair in a very short cut  so I did not really get to play around with my hair much, and once I got to college I was only concerned with growing long permed hair. My hair grew to a decent length between my collar bone and shoulder blade but then a bad reaction to some medication made my hair break off. I decided to rock the short Rihanna look which worked for a while but I grew bored with it and decided to experiment with natural hair. I transitioned for about 4 months but then got bored and just big chopped.

How would you describe your hair and texture?
My hair is very thick in the middle, the back has a looser curl pattern and the front is slightly looser. My hair is very curly and shrinks up a lot but it also doesn’t have much of a curl pattern in the middle area.

How do you take care of your hair?
I shampoo my hair once every 2 weeks because I love having a clean scalp. I have sensitive skin, and I hate having product build up because it irritates my scalp. After shampooing, I deep condition my hair (although not every time because I get lazy), then I rinse out and set my hair in twists to dry and then I style. I usually de-tangle before washing, and I have been on a protective style challenge for about 4 months.

What are your words of inspiration to our readers?
Natural hair requires patience and sometimes it’s more work than you will be prepared for but don’t get discouraged. Enjoy your hair in whatever stage it is in, make use of the numerous platforms that offer advice and care tips but don’t get too overwhelmed. There is a lot of information out there but keep in mind that in the end it’s all just hair.
