Mumtrepreneur: A woman who juggles business and family life

Two weeks today its mother’s day in the UK on the 30th March we will be celebrating the wonderful women that  gave us life. But what is it like raising a family and having a business? I spoke to these three ladies to find out:

Alicia Thornthwaite is from Cambridgeshire, she has two children a seven year old and a three year old and is the owner of the company AfroDeity Ltd www.afrodeity.co.uk

Alica says:
I decided to start AfroDeity, with my mother, a week after my second child was born, three years ago. AfroDeity sources, features and retails Caribbean and Caribbean Inspired natural hair and beauty products. We now also have our own line of Caribbean Inspired products, Joliette, named after my mother.

If someone was reading this with a young family and wanted to start up their own natural business do you have any tips for them?
My kids are the most important thing in the world to me, they always come first. So how do you balance this overwhelming love with having something you call your own? I have always felt that a good support network is important, as I have found when doing my masters degree and starting this business. My husband and parents are very supportive and have always kept me going. Somedays you will feel like throwing the towel in and having people cheering you on to keep going helps. Having started the business with my mother I have so much support from her and she gets to see her grandkids all the time even though we live an hour and a half away.

Find a mentor to sound ideas off. They can again be another part of your support network. Test your ideas first before jumping in with both feet and most importantly learn from your mistakes. There is nothing wrong with making mistakes, as long as you learn from them.

Find and hold onto a niche part of the market and remember shout about your business, if people don’t know who you are, how can they support your business and buy your product.

Having a family doesn’t mean you can’t also be a successful woman.

Mother’s Day in the UK is at the end of this month, If one of my readers wanted to buy a gift for their mum from your company what would you recommend?
For Hair: The Joliette Curl Me Soft would be an amazing gift. Joliette Curl Me Softs around the country are being stolen from daughters bedrooms as we speak! Every Mum deserves a little luxury in her life and Joliette’s little luxurious bottles of Caribbean goodness will appeal to any mum. Joliette was named after my own mother who is my inspiration and no matter what I do in life she is always 100% behind me.

For Skin: I would also recommend the Fountain Pimento & Mint Medley Bath Salts which you can find on our site. They are currently Buy One Get One Free.

Make sure you have a support system in place

Reward yourself, if only mentally for the things you manage to tick off your daily to do list and don’t dwell on what didn’t get done.

Do write lists as they help you remember the multitude of things you need to get done, and/or create a weekly schedule

Our deep conditioner Shea Bliss is exactly that, it nourishes and moisturises the hair, but it can also be used as a leave-in and a moisturiser on dry hair. So really you’re purchasing 3 products in one!

Make sure you have a plan of what you want to achieve with your business.  Stay focused but be very flexible as it is not a straight route to achieving that dream.

These women are a great inspiration

  2. This is exactly what I am doing and its great to hear so many success stories. I started my business almost a year ago and have 2 little ones also. Yes it is hard but its very rewarding also and I can dance to the beat of my own drum which I think is important when you have children to take care of and you want to ensure that they are your no.1 priority. Hopefully in 5 years time I will be as successful if not more than these inspirational women.
