What is Kinky by Nature?

Kinky by Nature is a hair care brand speacialising in products for kinky, curly and wavy hair. These hair types can be dry and fragile so need the best products that do not harm but instead nurture and moisturise the hair encouraging it to grow strong and healthy.

How long has it been around?
Kinky by Nature was launched online at the beginning of March 2010 and has been growing steadily ever since.
It’s nice to see a black owned hair company, it’s only through research I have began to see how much of our own hair industry is owned by other races. What inspired you to start your company and why?
Since birth I have had short dry kinky hair. Growing my hair, moisturising it and maintaining the moisture levels were daily battles for me. I would walk through the aisles of the big hair stores looking for the miracle hair product, reaching for those claiming to be natural or promising amazing hair growth. I was endlessly disappointed by the results and by the lack of advice from people running the stores.
After years of frustration going between minimal and non-existent hair growth I reached for the dreaded relaxer, big mistake! The precious hair I had became limp and lifeless and started to break. I would grow out the relaxer but as there were no other apparent alternatives to lengthening my hair, I would return to relaxing always with dire results. I then moved onto hair extensions thinking ‘out of sight, out of mind’. I still resorted to hair grease whenever my hair felt dry – all this ‘treatment’ did my hair no good at all.
A few years ago I decided ‘enough!’ I started to research hair care and was blown away with all the information I found. I was shocked to discover that when products claim to be natural they only have to contain 10% of that ingredient.  Most of the remaining 90% of ingredients tend to be artificial, drying and damaging kinky hair and stripping the hair of moisture rather than locking it in. For example Sodium Lauryl Sulphate found in many shampoos and conditioners is a strong and harsh detergent used in industry as a degreaser and a powerful foaming agent. When applied to human skin it has the effect of stripping off the oil layer and then irritating and eroding the skin and scalp, leaving it rough and dry. Also Mineral Oil is detrimental. It coats the scalp like plastic, so it cannot breathe or take in moisture. Mineral oils do not give any nourishment to the scalp because they do not contain fatty acids, which enable absorption. I thought I had tried natural products without success whereas in fact the products I had been using did not enable the moisturising and stimulating elements of natural ingredients to do their thing.
I have subsequently spent my time sourcing and trying out 100% natural products and identified those that are beneficial to kinky, curly and wavy hair – i.e. protecting it from becoming dry and fragile.
What is your favourite product from your website? Why would you recommend it?
I love them all! I guess I would say my favourite product would have to be Organic Unrefined Shea Butter. My hair loves the stuff. Shea Butter moisturises my hair making it soft and bouncy. It helps to keep my scalp nice and healthy with lots of vitamins, absorbing quickly and completely to rehydrate without clogging the skin. I have acquired the ‘hand in hair syndrome’- just can’t stop touching my soft hair, oops!
How long have you been natural yourself?
I have been natural for nearly two years now and loving every moment.

Sophie Natural
What made you decide to become natural?
I wanted my hair to be at it’s healthiest and grow so I chose to go natural. I love that you can put natural hair in so many different hairstyles.
How do you take care of your hair day to day?
My routine changes slightly on a weekly basis but here is one of my favourite routines:
On a wash day I first damp my hair and apply Coconut Oil and leave it on for 15 minutes which moisturises my hair. I then wash my hair with my Apple Cider Vinegar, which makes my hair soft and very clean, followed by a conditioner. I then deep condition with Honey, Jojoba Oil and Passion fruit Oil warmed in a bowl over boiling water. I massage this onto my hair and scalp and leave for 30 minutes sitting under my hair steamer, and wash out. I love using this recipe as it really moisturises my hair. I either then follow with a Nettle tea rinse to strengthen my hair or I just put some leave-in conditioner in my hair followed by my Butter Me Up mixture which is on the hair recipe page on my website. This sounds like hard work but the results are fantastic and you quickly get the hang of it.
Your words of wisdom?
