To trim or not to trim

I found a new hair inspiration Mahogany Boisseau she is beautiful and her hair is amazing!

This is my dream fro
awww I cant wait until my hair does this
Isn’t she lovely?

In fact her hair is just like mine but much longer she is truly something to aspire to. Anyway I read her interview published in May on Afroniquely You and she said that she has been natural for 14 years and when asked about trimming hair she said “I personally do not clip my ends; your hair grows from your roots not your ends.  I stopped clipping my ends 4 years ago and it’s just fine.  I am not wearing my hair straight so there is no need to clip my ends”

A friend of mine has a little girl and since she was born has not trimmed her now very long hair, she said it has never needed it.  I was at home getting a bit stressed over where I was going to get my hair trimmed but now reading this I think that I have decided against it. (is this wise?)

I remember when I wore relaxer, I would painstakingly grow it for six weeks then go and get it relaxed and then the stylist would then trim my ends. You know it never grew past my shoulders.  I figure that might happen with my natural hair.

So what do you think? Does trimming work for you? Or have you just let your hair grow?
Comments on the website please

  1. I trim if I have damaged ends. Other than that I feel no need.

That is all. I figured I should keep it short and sweet.

  2. First, I love how Mohagany wears her hair. I tried to do that once and my hair was getting caught everywhere! Car doors, hooks on walls, etc…LOL
Second, I only trim when needed and I considered needed to be when I have an abundance of split ends and SSKs

  3. Her hear looks really good! I think its personal preference to whether or not to trim, me personally I trim my ends every 6-8weeks, but like you said I do have it straight sometimes so it looks better on the ends. when im rocking my curly hair ( Beyonce ‘work it out vid’) there really is no need.

  4. I only trim when my ends are getting a bit messed up – if they’re split, or continually knotting.
That way, I prevent the damamge going up the shaft.

But if your ends are good, then there’s no need to trim, really, except for styling.

  5. I was told that I had to trim regularly but now I’m not so sure. I only trim if I see damage. Otherwise what is the point?

  7. I haven’t trimmed in about a year and a half, mainly because its not my no1 priority. If i want to straighten my hair then i trim it basically to even out the ends, thats about it

  8. @ Beauty mindset, yes this is the way I am going to do it

@Tia, your hair must be lovely and long then, I couldn’t wear my hair like that either, not yet anyway

@Kimberly, thank you, I will check out your blog

@lyra7, yes if you trim all the time you cut off any growth

@asimplething, it seams to be what everyone is saying only trim if there is damage.

@ethnique185, I don’t know if I will trim my hair next year now you have said that! lol

  9. I dont trim my ends at all, i think i will when there is some damage done to my ends otherwise i dont see the reason to.

    🙂
