Will the Mystery Unlock?

So I have been seeing a video in blogs all up and down the country. The video features the beautiful Asha Mandela who has allegedly won the Guinness World Record for the longest dreadlocks it shows her washing those locks and when I watched it I was just thinking ‘why??’ In fact I posted it on Care for your Hair and they had a discussion on ‘how long is too long’ because this stuff is LONG (Watch it below)

Anyway I was shocked and dismayed to find out that she may have been stripped of her title because it was all extensions! They also say that they have removed this category from the record book.

I have heard of people putting on those new hair wigs and pretending it’s theirs. I even knew a black girl who bad a blonde weave and swore it was her hair, she said it was from some throwback form her ancestors (we were about 17 at the time though), but sewing on 19ft locks onto your head …I just don’t know….you must get money for it right?

I have been unable to verify if this is actually true but I cannot find her on the GWR website anywhere or that category. On her own website the link to her award is broken.

SO? Did she win or didn’t she?

I guess one day the truth will emerge

  1. From what I remember, she *did* win – but there’s controversy over the fact that dreadlocks occasionally break off and then are knotted back onto the hair – effectively, becoming extensions. So they decided to rest the category (retire it).

  2. wow!! I posted this on my blog. I cannot believe anyone has the time to have extensions of this nature that take so much time and care- just to be in the Guinness book- or do they? We cannot trust anyone anymore!! Jah Bless

  3. How does one get to do the normal things in life with hair this long? How long is long indeed? One need not become a slave to hair.

  4. She is the next rapunzel, it is good to see her hair that long! especially as a black woman.

  5. @Simple Thing, oooooh well that sounds a bit more plausible. If that is true what kind of nasty people are there out there. There are now blogs and videos on YouTube calling her a ‘fake’ an d a ‘liar’ that must be quite hurtful for her.

@Naturally UK, I am do not care about the Guinness book that much! Perhaps you get money

@Chanda, I am so so with you on that one

@Valerie’s World, if it is her hair, it’s an amazing length

The woman started out as a fraud when she illegally utilized another woman’s image claiming it was her to draw interest in her first try at the GWR when her hair was 5ft long with one 8ft dreadlock. Then when her hair jump from that to almost 20 in less than two months with the claim that the additional 15 feet of hair was secretly hidden and knotted up within the 5 feet of locks, that when her scam was blown. any one with locks knows that those knots, regardless how small or hidden would be visible to the naked eye and touch and none of her previous pictures or videos show these knots. What the pictures and videos do show are straight thin locks with a considerable amount of hair loss along the hairline and on top.
This woman has no shame and has given women with locks a bad rep or the assumption that who ever has locks has long extensions which is not necessarily the case. She has since gotten rid of her old website with all the tale tale previous pictures and videos exposing her own self replacing it with her new website only showing her with the extensions.
Why anyone would need sooo much attention over their hair is a sign of low self esteem. She tries to come off so spiritual yet is so attached her hair and attention. then trying to tour all the hair show circuits to show case her hair and have everybody touching it and dragging the ground…so not spiritual…no one with real lock would do this. Plus she was given the challenge on more than one occasion to simply demonstrate house she knots a 20ft lock to 5ft with invisible knots..she has not done this, nor are there any pictures or documentation of her locking journey.
She claims on her website that she went back home to Trinidad to have her locks unraveled by some shop called “Odetta’s”…yet no one seem to be able to locate such a shop or this Odetta for verification. Plus her stories were constantly changing.
I think the GWR did the right thing and the you tube videos exposing her are good for consumers who are hiring her under the pretense that she has 19ft of continuous hair growth.

hmmmm just looking at the front of her hair…. Its interesting that she’s grown them this long (with a little re-attachment help) but personally I just do not approve of sacrificing healthy hair for long hair.

The problem I have with this woman is the fact that she continue to present herself as if she is a GWR title holder, and she’s been totally dishonest with the GWR and the public!

The woman has no shame or guilt!
When she initially began her attempt for the world record, back in the end of 2008, she used(unknowingly to the victim) a picture of another woman’s long locs saying it was her and submitted it to newspapers all over world, web pages, and blogs, to solicit interviews and publicity for herself.

I’ve seen all kinds of locked hair, and many men and women with incredibly long locs. These knots that Asha says she put in her hair to shortened an extra 15 feet of hair rose a red flag for most people, and there is no record or evidence of the alleged knots.
Now I’ve seen folks tie knots in their hair trying to reconnect broken locs and it is easily detected. Visually, after looking at all of Asha’s pictures and the videos before the unleashing of the extra 15 ft of this woman’s hair, I was expecting to see a lot of knots in each loc but did not, just some areas where it look as though some hair was added or reconnected.
Anyone with locs can attest that if you put knots in your locs it will shorten the length, but the knots would be visible and make your hair bulky. Further more, if the knots are left in for any length of time, they will be literally impossible to let out. Asha claims she left these knots in for 13 years!
Also, the 2008 hair pictures (where there was tremendous visible hair loss to the top of her head and damage to her edges i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n498/Longlocks2010/ashafraud3.png and the 2010 hair pictures look dramatically different in color texture, size and length so there are some big unexplained discrepancies. I know beauticians that do lock extensions and some folks get synthetic or human hair added, other people come with a bag of their own locs that have broken off or fallen out to be added back where it originally broke away from or to extend their own length. It is more than very possible that Asha has done all of the above.
